Itinerary

Oporto to Oporto

After leaving the pastel-coloured metropolis of Porto behind, you’ll take to the Douro and navigate a path through Portugal’s enchanting countryside. Steeply terraced vineyards rise from the river banks, historic landmarks pepper the distant horizons and charming townships lay hidden in the rural hillsides. The golden city of Salamanca glows myriad colours both day and night, while your return journey back to Porto is filled with even more cultural and historical treats.

Day 1: UK – Porto. Your holiday begins with a transfer from your home to the airport, your flight departs from London. On arrival at Porto you’ll be met by an Emerald Waterways representative and transferred to the ship where you will be welcomed by your Captain and crew. In the evening you will enjoy a welcome reception and dinner on board in the Reflections Restaurant. (Dinner)

Day 2: Porto – Pinhao. Today’s full day of sailing takes you through the twists and turns of the Douro Valley, a sparsely populated UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its spectacular scenery, quaint villages, thriving vineyards and authentic quintas. Your Cruise Director will host an informative lecture on the region’s history and wine culture as you sail along. Late afternoon you arrive in Pinhao, which is situated on a river bend surrounded by terraced hillsides producing some of the world’s best Port. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 3: Pinhao – Vega de Terron. We travel to Lamego nestled among the terraced slopes of the Douro valley port wine-growing region, the town is elegant and infused with Baroque style. Visit the remains of a Baroque Sanctuary and battlements where you will enjoy a unique historical insight into the region’s vast and eclectic past. Upon returning to your ship, you’ll be invited to enjoy a BBQ dinner on the Sun Deck. As you sail to Vega de Terron, you can learn from the xperts
on board with a Portugese cooking demonstration including special local recipes. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 4: Salamanca. Founded in Roman times, the city of Salamanca is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, the seat of the Spanish language, and to this day the UNESCO World Heritage Site is still a lively town. With its grand squares and Medieval structures, a walking tour here is more like stepping back in time. You’ll enjoy a full day in this beautiful golden city with plenty of free time to explore independently. (breakfast, dinner)

Day 5: Pocinho. This morning arrive in the village of Pocinho and embark on an excursion to the Foz Coa Museum. This impressive structure details pre-historic carvings made by the early inhabitants of the Douro. Later, we return to our ship for lunch and bask in the idyllic surroundings as you cruise to Regua. Why not make the most of the ship’s Sun Deck Serenity Pool and relax in the sunshine? This evening your highlight dinner will be hosted at a local wine estate from the Pinhao region. Dine on regional dishes and sip fine, local wines, raising a toast to your first full day on the Douro. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 6: Regua. Wake up today in the town of Regua, a place filled with history. Your walking tour here includes the Douro Museum which showcases the history of wine making in the surrounding valleys. The museum is housed in the fully restored and adapted Casa da Companhia Velha, a building that is emblematic of the history of the world’s oldest demarcated and regulated wine region. It is a dynamic centre for cultural activities, where visitors can find an exhibition
area, the A Companhia restaurant, the library, reading room and a wine bar overlooking the River Douro. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 7: Porto. Located at the mouth of the Douro River, Porto is a fascinating eclectic mix of modern and ancient architecture, and there is so much to explore. In the Medieval Ribeira district, narrow cobbled streets wind past merchant’s houses and cafes. Its most famous export is of course fortified wine, and the hillside across from the city centre features numerous wine caves and tasting boutiques in the area of Vila Nova de Gaia. (breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Day 8: Porto. After breakfast disembark your river cruise ship and transfer to the airport for your homebound flight to London. On arrival in the UK you will be met by our transfer service and returned to your home. (breakfast)
