There are few places in the world that can rival the beauty of the Norwegian fjords, and in June 2026 I had the privilege of escorting 70 passengers on an unforgettable cruise aboard Fred.Olsen’s Borealis. With long daylight hours and spectacular scenery, the voyage proved to be everything we had hoped for
Embarkation Day
Our journey began with comfortable coach transfers to Southampton, and after a smooth embarkation, everyone had plenty of time to settle into their cabins before exploring the ship.
Days at Sea
Sea days are often underestimated, but aboard Borealis they become part of the holiday itself. Whether relaxing with a coffee while watching the ocean drift by, listening to live music, attending talks about Norway, or simply enjoying the excellent dining options, there was always something to do. As an escort, I was available each day so any customers that had any queries could contact me. On the second evening I had the pleasure of hosting an exclusive drinks party in the Observatory, bringing all of our party together, a chance to relax, socialise, and raise a glass while admiring the stunning Norwegian coastline together.
Life On Board
Borealis proved to be a welcoming and comfortable home throughout the voyage. The crew were exceptionally friendly, the entertainment was varied, and the food consistently excellent. My favourite restaurant was Colours & Tastes , this does have a cover charge of £20pp, but it was more than worth it.
Entertainment on offer ranges from theatre performances, live music, quizzes, or simply relaxing in one of the lounges. My favourite lounge was the Observatory lounge, situated at the front of the ship with floor to ceiling glass to enjoy the spectacular views.
Olden – Gateway to the Fjords
Our first taste of Norway came with our visit to the picturesque village of Olden. Surrounded by towering mountains and crystal-clear waters, it was easy to see why this is one of Norway's most popular cruise destinations. Some members of the group chose excursions to the famous Briksdal Glacier, while others enjoyed strolling around the village, browsing the local shops, or simply soaking up the peaceful atmosphere beside the fjord. I took an open top bus tour here to further explore the stunning scenery and learn about the town. Everywhere we looked there were postcard-perfect views.
Cruising Nordfjord and Innvikfjord
Leaving Olden, we enjoyed one of the highlights of the cruise as Borealis sailed through the magnificent Nordfjord and Innvikfjord. Passengers gathered on the open decks and balconies to admire dramatic cliffs, snow-capped peaks, waterfalls tumbling down the mountainsides, and tiny farms clinging to impossibly steep hillsides.
Bergen – Norway's Historic Coastal City
Our next stop was the vibrant city of Bergen, with its colourful waterfront and rich maritime history. Many of us wandered around the famous Bryggen Wharf, admired the traditional wooden buildings, and explored the bustling fish market. I travelled on the Fløibanen Funicular for spectacular views across the city and surrounding mountains, there are plenty of forest walks once up there and boats for hire on a lake! Others simply enjoyed coffee or a beer in one of Bergen's welcoming cafés.
Despite being Norway's second-largest city, Bergen has a relaxed atmosphere that makes it a delight to explore.
Ulvik – The Heart of Hardanger
The peaceful village of Ulvik offered a completely different experience. Nestled deep within the Hardanger region, it is renowned for its fruit orchards and tranquil surroundings. Ulvik was my first experience of a tender port. Instead of the ship docking alongside the quay, we travelled ashore by tender boat. Although I had been looking forward to experiencing this part of cruising, I was also aware that it would be something new for both me and some of the passengers. In reality, the process was extremely well organised by the crew. Everything ran smoothly, and before long we were stepping ashore ready to explore.
Cruising Maurangerfjord and Furebergsfossen
The scenery became even more dramatic as we approached the magnificent Furebergsfossen waterfall. Watching torrents of glacial water cascade hundreds of feet into the fjord while surrounded by towering cliffs was simply breathtaking, the captain carefully manoeuvred the ship for everyone to enjoy the best possible views.
Sandnes – A Warm Norwegian Welcome
Our final Norwegian port was Sandnes, a charming town that combines traditional Norwegian character with modern shopping and cafés. Some members of the group explored the pedestrian streets and waterfront, while others took the train to Stavanger, Norway’s fourth largest city, known for its mix of maritime history, modern energy industries, vibrant food scene, and easy access to spectacular natural landscapes. Stavanger is one of Norway's top culinary destinations. Stavanger holds the annual Gladmat, Scandinavia's largest food festival, and we were lucky enough for this to be on the day we were visiting, I enjoyed sampling the local delicacies.
A Journey to Remember
From the peaceful beauty of Olden and Ulvik to the colourful streets of Bergen, the dramatic cruising through Nordfjord, Innvikfjord and Maurangerfjord, and the unforgettable sight of Furebergsfossen cascading into the fjord, every day offered something extraordinary. Experiencing Norway at the height of summer was an amazing experience, however next on my wishlist is to return in the winter and experience the northern lights in The Land of the Midnight sun!
