Leaving the pastel-coloured metropolis of Porto, navigate a path through Portugal’s enchanting countryside. Terraced vineyards rise from the river banks, historic landmarks pepper distant horizons and charming townships lay hidden in the rural hillsides. Salamanca glows myriad colours both day and night and canoeing experiences in Pocinho introduce a new perspective to the Douro.
Day 1: London to Porto Your holiday begins with a transfer from your home to the airport, your flight departs from London. On arrival in Porto you will be transferred to your luxurious Emerald Waterways StarShip. You will be welcomed by your captain and crew, before enjoying dinner on-board. (Dinner)
Day 2: Porto-Pinhão Today, enjoy a full day sailing the Douro Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, this area is sparsely populated by small, quaint villages and communities, as well as working vineyards and small farms. Your Cruise Director will also host a lecture on the history of food and wine culture in the region, before arriving in Pinhão. Situated on a river bend surrounded by terraced hillsides, it is known for producing some of the best Port. (Breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Day 3: Pinhão Today you will head to Quinta Vineyard in the heart of the Douro Valley for a tour and wine tasting. Alternatively, embark on an included EmeraldACTIVE guided hike through local vineyards, before returning to your ship for lunch and an afternoon sailing to Vega De Terron. (Breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Day 4: Vega De Terron to Salamanca This morning we board a coach and travel to the beautiful golden city of Salamanca for a guided walking tour. Passing through its grand squares and medieval structures, you will feel like you are stepping back in time. You will have plenty of free time to explore independently before returning to the ship late afternoon. (Breakfast, dinner)
Day 5: Pocinho to Régua This morning, arrive in Pocinho where you have a choice of, a visit to one of the most famous wine estates in Portugal, Quinto do Seixo, take part in an EmeraldACTIVE canoeing experience, or travel to the Coa Valley museum. Later, return to your ship for lunch and enjoy your idyllic surroundings as you sail towards Régua. (Breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Day 6: Régua Today, on an included excursion, you will have the opportunity to visit the marvellous Baroque village of Lamego and the picturesque Our Lady of Remedies Sanctuary. (Breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Day 7: Porto Located at the mouth of the Douro River, Porto is a fascinating eclectic mix of modern and ancient architecture. Its most famous export is of course fortifed wine, and the hillside across from the city centre features numerous wine caves and tasting boutiques in the area of Vila Nava de Gaia. Sample the local fair in one of these specially adapted wine cellars
and learn about the long adapted craft of creating port. (Breakfast, lunch, dinner)
Day 8: Porto to London After breakfast, it is time to say farewell and disembark the ship for your transfer to Porto airport. On arrival in the UK you will be met by our transfer service and returned to your home
